New Zealand – Day 3

You gotta have the bad days, so you can love the good days even more – Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No good, Very bad day.

Day 3 was a pretty dismal day all round.

I didn’t take many photos because reasons.

First stop Otorohanga Kiwi House. I was very disappointed with this experience. We paid $24 each to see LITERALLY NOTHING. Half of the displays and enclosures were empty. Where are all the animals? I don’t know. Not here.

Also, Kiwi’s sleep forever. Up to 18 hours per day so the likelihood of seeing one is very slim. Incredibly slim. We happened upon the Kiwi house around feeding time. They had 3 or 4 Kiwis in their program, however we only managed to see one for about 4 seconds.

Next we drove to the first stop of The Trilogy Experience which was Waitomo Caves. Photos were not allowed inside. We explored the caves filled with glow worms, and had a small boat ride through the caves. Our guide was rather fantastic as he took us deep within the caves and then serenaded us with the most angelic voice, amplified by the echoes bouncing off the walls of the cave.

Please be mindful not to touch ANYTHING. The bacteria and oils from human skin can ruin the natural formations.

Ruakuri Cave is also part of this experience and equally amazing. Again I have zero photos from this encounter.

From here we took a short drive to Mangapohue Natural Bridge.

This area is full of limestone (or karst).

After the caves we were supposed to head down to Mt Ruapehu. Unfortunately for us, all access roads were closed off due to heavy snowfall. We quickly made arrangements for accommodation at Waitomo Caves Hotel.

If you like old, quirky mansions. This place is for you.

If you value warmth, a decent bathroom, and warm water. This place is not for you.

The only thing going for it is the eccentric interior.

We did not eat in the restaurant, but it was pretty full the night we were there so I assume it must have been good. The photos online make it look amazingly luxurious. This was not our experience.

So that was our crappy end to a crappy day.

Don’t do day 3. Except the caves. Caves are cool.
